Before you pop the question, make sure you have all the answers about the most important element of the occasion: the engagement ring.
Here at Talsma Jewelers we can help you understand what to look for. When you’re shopping for the right ring to invest in your relationship, our 50 years of experience and knowledge offers you priceless guidance above and beyond what you might get at stores.
“The chain stores basically sell pre-graded diamonds,” says Bruce Talsma, the second-generation owner of our local business with a showroom at 4000 Chicago Dr. SW in downtown Grandville. “There’s several different diamond-grading companies and the standards differ from company to company.
“That’s where we come in. A lot of the places just have sales staff. We educate the customer saying this is what it is so you know exactly what you’re buying.”
We have a half-century of experience explaining differences in a diamond’s size, cut, color and clarity. You’re able to trust us instead of relying only on a diamond grade, because you’re not really buying a piece of paper with a grade but a symbol of love for your fiancée.
“We see a lot of diamonds come in with grading reports that are not very accurate,” Talsma says. “In some cases it’s actually a lower grade, maybe even two grades lower. We see that on a regular basis.
“We make sure that the stones that we sell are exactly as they’re presented.”
If you can’t find the perfect ring, you can dream it up. We specialize in custom jewelry including custom engagement rings. Just bring in a photograph of what you’d like, or sketch it out, and in a few weeks your custom ring will be ready for you to pick up.
“We can actually create rings,” Talsma says. “You can bring a picture in. We’ll do a computer rendering of it.”
Nearly 3 million people in the United States changed their status to engaged last year on Facebook. The average age of engagement is 24, and the most popular months to get engaged are November and December.
In addition to engagement rings, we offer other fine jewelry at competitive pricing, provide in-house jewelry repair service, and will buy old jewelry including gold, silver, watches, gemstones, coins and sterling silverware.
